Welcome

John Paul College is a Catholic Co-educational College established in 1984 serving the Goldfields Community in Western Australia. From our foundations of PRENDIVILLE COLLEGE 'for Girls' established in 1971 and CHRISTIAN BROTHERS COLLEGE, CBC, 'for boys' Kalgoorlie established in 1906, we continue to educate young men and women within a Catholic framework of justice, peace and charity. These foundations form the College motto of Justice, Peace and Charity and underpin all activities and relationships we foster at the College.

The College offers a diverse programme for students in Years 7 through to 12 based on Catholic teaching and service to others. As well as traditional core subjects the College has an extensive curriculum with opportunities for students to participate in drama, music, information technology and sporting activities. These complement and add diversity to the broader curriculum on offer at John Paul College.

As you travel through the site you will witness the diversity of our community and see some of the ways our mission is lived out through the many facets of life at John Paul College. Parents and students considering John Paul College as a possible destination for high school can sample some of the spiritual, academic, social and sporting opportunities on offer through this site.

History

John Paul College is a Catholic Co-Educational Secondary School formed in 1984 by the amalgamation of PRENDIVILLE COLLEGE 'for Girls' (Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart) and CHRISTIAN BROTHERS COLLEGE, CBC, 'for boys' Kalgoorlie.

Although celebrating thirty years of service to the community of Western Australia's Eastern Goldfields in 2014, the traditions of the College draw on and celebrate over one hundred years of involvement in local education by our four founding Orders, the Christian Brothers, the Sisters of St Joseph, the Sisters of St John of God and the Sisters of Mercy.

The College crest contains the cross, a sign of faith that inspires one to excellence with God as our leader. The open book with the Greek letters Alpha and Omega symbolises God as the beginning and the end of all truth. The headframe is symbolic of Kalgoorlie and indicates the close relationship that has developed between the school and the community.

The motto of the College is 'Justice, Peace and Charity'. These words have been strongly exemplified by the Religious Congregations who brought Catholic Education to the Goldfields and remains a relevant focus in the College today.

JPC Colours

INTRODUCTION

At John Paul College, we encourage our students to value the opportunities that are made available to them in pursuing both academic studies and co-curricular activities. The skills and knowledge gained from such pursuits ensure our students are able to meet any challenges with confidence.

Co-Curricular Programme

The co-curricular programme offered at John Paul College is extensive and enables our students to participate in a diverse range of activities. We believe that a wide-ranging co-curricular programme provides for a holistic education in which students can compete, participate and engage in activities outside the normal classroom situation.

The College deliberately pursues excellence and encourages students to achieve their best. An element of this mission is celebrating and rewarding the hard work and camaraderie that are developed within a co-curricular activity. The recognition of students' achievement in, and commitment to, co-curricular activity, is the basis for this system.

Awards may be presented in the following co-curricular activities:

Awards Programme

John Paul College has built a culture where excellence is recognised, valued and aspired to. The incorporation of Colours into the College Awards is an important element of this. High achievement in any area of discipline requires a willingness to commit to greater hours of practice, readiness to make sacrifices and learning beyond what is simply taught in the classroom.

Colours provide public and ongoing acknowledgement of achievement and underline that at JPC all fields of excellence are aspired to and recognised. Academic Colours may be presented for achievement across any combination of subjects from Years 7 -12.

Awards for Academic & Co-Curricular Activities

John Paul College has in place a four-tiered system for recognising both achievement in and commitment to a co-curricular activity. The criteria for the awarding of prizes are clearly outlined in this booklet.

The four-tiers are:

  1. PRINCIPAL'S HONOURS
In circumstances of exceptional achievement a student is eligible, at the Principal's discretion to receive Principal's Honours.

It is important to note that achieving the criteria for Full Colours in an area a second time does not automatically entitle a student to receive Principal's Honours. It is also important to note the awarding of Principal's Honours is entirely at the discretion of the Principal. Nominations for these Honours are supplied to the Principal by the Colours Committee. Successful nominees are awarded a certificate and a silver shield badge.

  2. FULL COLOURS
When - Awarded at a full school assembly, printed in the Newsletter and College Annual.
What - Students are awarded a certificate and a Full Colours shield badge.
How – Students that deem themselves eligible must present a Colours nomination form to the Colours Committee before the conclusion of the Term.

  3. HALF COLOURS
When - Awarded at a full school assembly, printed in the Newsletter and College Annual.
What - Students are awarded a certificate and a Half Colours badge.
How - Students that deem themselves eligible must present a Colours nomination form to the Colours Committee before the conclusion of the school term.

  4. JUNIOR COLOURS
When - Awarded at a full school assembly, printed in the Newsletter and College Annual.
What - Students are awarded a certificate and a Junior Colours badge.
How - Students in Years 7 – 9 that deem themselves eligible must present a Colours nomination form to the Colours Committee before the conclusion of the school term.

The Colours Committee will meet periodically throughout the year as nominations are submitted. Honours, Full Colours, Half Colours and Junior Colours will be published in the Daily Notices prior to presentation of awards at a School Assembly.

Colours Appeals

Any student who wishes to contest the decision of the Colours Committee in relation to their nomination for an award, must lodge an appeal in writing to the Vice Principal within 48 hours of the awards being published. The appeal must be written by the student (using the proforma available at student reception) and state the reasons the student disagrees with the decision of the Colours Committee. The appeal must focus on the reasons the award is deserved and must not make comparison with other students who have received the award. The students must also make themselves available to speak to the Colours Committee at a specially convened meeting prior to the presentation at the School Assembly.

Once the Colours Committee has considered the appeal, its decision is final.

Note: the appeals process is between the student and the Colours committee.

Timeline for Presentation Of Awards

Awards are made on the basis of attendance, participation, excellence and/or service. Nomination forms for Colours will be presented to the Colours Committee by the student. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that nominations meet the criteria for the level of award for which the student is being nominated.

The completed form needs to be returned to the corresponding Head of Learning Area.

The Colours Committee will consider the nominations and accept or reject individual recommendations. Colours will be presented in Terms One, Two and Three. Students and Parents will be notified by mail letter one week prior to the presentation. Principal's Honours may be presented at Awards Night.

Curriculum

John Paul College aspires to provide a holistic educational experience for all students. As a Catholic institution, we believe that it is our responsibility to ensure that we continually build upon the spiritual growth of our students. This spiritual development enables our students to leave John Paul College as caring, compassionate and empathetic individuals who can make positive and productive contributions to the wider community. We believe that effective and nurturing pastoral care is an essential pre-condition to ensuring that our students reach their academic potential. Our curriculum choices are designed to offer students a broad spectrum of subject choices and to experience a range of co-curricular opportunities. In providing this diversity in Years 7-10 it then assists the students to make informed and considered decisions for their subject choices in Years 11 and 12.

Vocational Education

The General (VET) Pathway's programme has been developed for those seeking employment, apprenticeships, traineeships or entry into TAFE, while still achieving the Western Australian Certificate in Education (WACE).

The innovative Programme allows the selection from Certificates being offered within the Kalgoorlie region and online options. All students therefore work towards a Nationally Recognised Certificate Qualification. General VET Pathway students are automatically enrolled in WORKPLACE LEARNING which allows 'job sampling' and valuable experience, industry contacts and 'points' towards a future TAFE entry if desired.

The General VET Programme has a compulsory 'work placement' component.

Celebrating Success

Employment Success

We congratulate our 2016 VET students who have successfully found employment. We have heard of many reports of students who have gained apprenticeships this year. Well done..

A special mention is given to our 2016 Year 11 students who, after completing one year of the VET program, were able to gain apprenticeships for 2017. We say congratulations to Justin Brown, Emilio Jansen, Joe Kemp and Morgan Moloney-Sands and wish you every success in your career.

It is expected that our students will take pride in their personal appearance and be supported in this by parents to ensure that uniforms are complete, clean, and tidy, in good condition and fit well.

Student ICT Acceptable Use Policy

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been introduced into schools allowing access to email and the Internet and other telecommunication devices. The availability of such resources provides the opportunity for schools to help students develop their full potential. ICT provides significant educational value but can pose a risk of exposure to inappropriate and offensive material and personal safety.
ICT Acceptable Use Policy

Staff ICT Acceptable Use Policy

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has allowed schools to develop teaching and learning experiences for students through resource sharing and communication. Using ICT, accessing information, and communicating electronically can be innovative, timely and efficient. It is essential that ICT Resources be used in an appropriate manner by both staff and students to enrich teaching and learning.

Students in Catholic schools are educated to understand that they are physical/spiritual beings in relationship with God. Catholic schools encourage students to make responsible choices for their lives including healthy food choices.

Occupational Health and Safety Policy

Dignity, safety and well-being of people are central to the Church's teaching. Retreat Policy

School retreats are an integral part of the life-long faith formation of young people. They promote systematic, intentional catechesis as part of the comprehensive evangelisation of students. Catholic school retreats are relational at heart. To be effective, retreat programs acknowledge the individual's unique reality and bring the power of the Gospel into contemporary culture in a way that engages and empowers young people.

Out of School Learning and Training

Out-of-School Learning and Training Programs provide a valuable pathway for students to explore their transition from school to post-school opportunities. John Paul College contributes to the development of students and their individual needs by providing an educational experience that seeks to promote integrated personal development by relating their curriculum and learning to real life situations.
Out of School Learning Policy

Rice House

The crest of the congregation of Christian Brothers has many symbols. The Celtic lettering and tracery are symbolic of the congregation's Irish origins and the star is a symbol of enlightenment and guidance. The circle represents eternity and the open book indicates learning is to be brought to the young. The letters Alpha and Omega remind us that God is the beginning and the end of all truth. The motto 'Facere Et Docere' means 'to do and teach'

Clancy House

The crest of the Sisters of St John of God congregation shows a pomegranate set between two branches beneath a cross. The pomegranate is a symbol of charity because when the fruit is ripe the skin bursts open. The cross is a reminder that to love is to suffer as well as to give, while the branches are a sign of victory to those who have persevered.

McAuley House

The 'Mercy Cross' was designed by Catherine McAuley and reflected her deep love for the crucified Jesus. The tradition of the Sisters of Mercy is that the body of Jesus is not shown on the Cross as each Sister places herself upon the Cross in union with Jesus. It was black with a white inset and attached to a large rosary hanging from the belt worn at the waist. It was modernised in 1966, keeping the basics of the original symbol in place.

MacKillop House

The Josephite Emblem, worn by the Sisters of St Joseph, is symbolic and traditional in its origin. The M is for Mary, the Mother of God. The three Js are for Jesus, Joseph and John the Baptist. Mary MacKillop had great devotion to John the Baptist - the one who came to prepare the way for Jesus. This monogram, formed in blue braid, was first worn by the early Sisters on the front of their brown habit.

Prendiville House

The crest of Archbishop Prendiville shows his Irish heritage with the harp, his Australian home with the Southern Cross and Black Swans for Western Australia. The Gaelic football reminds us of his sporting skills and the cross tells us of his deep faith.

Suitable Devices

What is a 'suitable device'?

John Paul College has some expectations as to the capabilities of the devices being used on campus – this is to ensure that the devices are fit for purpose (education) and work with our infrastructure.

To assist parents in ensuring they purchase a 'suitable device', we have prepared the "JPC - Suitable Device Guidelines" document which clearly indicates which devices are suitable for each year.
(Major suppliers of computing equipment in Kalgoorlie have also received a copy of this)

Suitable Device Guidelines 2021

Where can I buy a 'suitable device'?

John Paul College will continue our partnership with Winthrop and commence a new partnership with JB HI-FI to provide a parent portal in which a list of several, pre-selected 'suitable devices' will be available for purchase. This allows parents to choose from a range of devices with varying and discounted prices.

Founders Day

John Paul College celebrates Founders' Day and Unfair Day in Term 2. This is a fantastic day and one of the highlights on the John Paul College calendar. It is a day of respect, commemoration, and awareness. We take the time to reflect and admire our College Founders, their contribution to Catholic Education in Kalgoorlie / Boulder and Western Australia and we take action to follow them by living more selflessly and helping others.

On Founders' Day we also incorporate 'Unfair Day' in that we raise money through fair type stalls to provide support to those not as fortunate as ourselves and raise awareness of others in our world who do not have the same opportunities as we do. It is unfair that of the 2.2 billion children in the world, half of these children live in poverty. According to the international agencies who work in various ways to establish equality around the world, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty and without the attention of the media. That's an astonishing 8 million children a year.

Of children and adults over a billion cannot read and write.

These important and tragic inequalities often go unnoticed by people living in developed nations. We do not realise the difficulties many face in surviving each day, and it affects so many children and adults in their daily survival. Around a third of the world lives on wages of less than $5 a day.

Think of what you spend $5 on each day. Think of what it would cost your family to live each day.

On Founders Day and our Unfair Day, we have the chance to raise funds to help those less fortunate. We do this by acknowledging the spirit of our Founders; Bridget Clancy, Redmond Prendiville, Catherine McAuley, Edmund Rice and Mary MacKillop in helping those in need.

The day begins with a whole school Mass followed by an assembly. In the afternoon we have a number of games, competitions and feasting. Each individual homeroom organises and runs a stall that provides creative and enjoyable ways to spend our time and money.

While we are having fun we are raising valuable funds for the Archbishop’s Life Link Program that helps homeless and underprivileged people in Western Australia.

Dancing

All year groups participate in the annual Dancing lessons conducted by Humphreys Dance Studio. Each year group for one week has daily lessons which culminate in a Social when students can show off the dances learned with prizes awarded for best renditions. The Year 7 and 8 Social and the Year 9 and 10 Social’s are held at the Palace Theatre, Boulder. The Year 11 and 12 Social is held at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall.

The Dancing lessons are conducted over the two weeks in Term 1 and the lessons are something really special at John Paul College.

Hairspray

Hairspray promised to be a fun and entertaining evening. There were two casts and each actor brought something different and special to their interpretation. It was a trip back to the 60s, with big hair, lively music, great dancing and accompanied by the John Paul College Band!

The two main themes in Hairspray are relevant to all teenagers around the world: - all people should be treated equally despite differences in race, religion, colour or appearance and that one should stand up for what they believe in and what is right. Tracy Turnbald is an average teenager; she and her best friend Penny watch the latest music show "Corny Collins" and she has a crush on Link Larkin. When a place in the Corny Collins cast becomes available Tracy successfully makes it onto the show. Tracy can't understand why the "black kids" only get to dance on the show "once a month" and with the help of her friends, Motomouth Maybell and her parents she is going to integrate the show…without denting her 'do'!

Parents & Friends

The role of the JPC Parents and Friends Association is to engage and build tangible relationships with parents, parish and school so that students may experience a sense of Christian community by embracing new friendships and build a sense of belonging and trust. The P&F works closely with the school Principal and school authorities to achieve common goals and school vision and also acts as a forum for ideas and discussion on any relevant issue that will benefit the education of the children.

Meeting once a month on the second Tuesday of each school term, the Committee plays a very important behind the scenes role at John Paul College. For example, in 2019, the following projects were funded by the P&F; buses for ACC, Science Investigation Night, Year 12 graduation gifts and Humphreys Dance Lessons. In 2020, to date, the P&F has funded shade sails for the new canteen and Humphreys Dance Lessons. Parents and friends are invited to join the Committee or just attend to find out more. All new members are very welcome. The P&F is the perfect opportunity to meet those involved at the school and to be across what is happening around the college.

The next meeting will be held at 6pm on Tuesday, 11th August 2020 via Zoom Video Conferencing. Contact Sharon Henderson P&F President for more details via email: sharon.henderson70@yahoo.com.au.

“As a Parents and Friends body, we are strong believers that communication between school and home is vital. We know that building understanding and support between teachers and parents is essential for the overall development of our children. It is only with teachers, students and parents working together that we can create a truly great school, which we believe is the case at John Paul College. We feel that the more opportunities we provide for parents and staff to meet, talk and work together, the greater the chance of developing a strong partnership. On behalf of the P&F, I strongly encourage all families to be a part of our parent body in an active way. Please do consider joining us and attend our meetings to be a part of our decision making. If you would like to contact me to find out more, please email me at: sharon.henderson70@yahoo.com.au. I would be only too happy to discuss the benefits of being a P&F Committee Member. Thankyou.”
